Determining the Health Needs of Men: Promoting Men As Health Heroes

Determining the Health Ne Increased health and wellbeing into the senior yearsGenerally amongst populations of different countries, men have a lower life expectancy than women. With a lot of discussion in many political arenas of increasing the age of retirement, it is becoming increasingly necessary for men to take charge of improving their health. Quality of life, and increased functionality and mobility should be normal as men age, not a slow decline of health. Men can do much to be a health hero, and increase their potential for increased physical strength, functionality and mobility and healthy mental faculties well into their senior years.Health Heroes have Health ChecksPrimary or preventive health for men helps them become aware of what they need to do in order to reduce the risk of developing a chronic disease as they get older. How Is Your Worksite Wellness Program Addressing The Biopsychosocial Nature Of Health? (Are You?)

Health is a complex concept. And you do want to understand how to best address it, correct?I have previously written that health and wellness are two clearly different concepts. As a result, I see the worksite wellness programs of today as not really being wellness programs at all, but really being employee health status management programs. If you accept this premise, this means that as a worksite wellness professional you should have a clear understanding about the nature of health. Do you think you do?Health, like wellness, can have many different definitions. Again, like wellness, there appears to be agreement around the idea that health is a complex concept which has several different determinants. The determinants of health can be classified into several broad categories: policymaking, social factors, health services, individual behavior and biology and genetics. Health is often referred to as being a complex biopsychosocial concept.Breaking the term biopsychosocial down int...

What Can You Do With A Health Promotion Degree?

Health promotion aims to enrich the health of individuals through awareness in environmental factors, education, and behavior. Health promotion can be described as a way to positively guide the psychological, environmental, biological, and physical health of individuals and communities. Health promotion can include behavior, skills, attitudes, and health knowledge. By being educated on this topic, individuals can help prevent disease and increase their quality of life through behavior changes. Through education and prevention, individuals may reduce financial costs for themselves, employers, and what insurance companies might spend for medical treatment.Individuals working in the health field may be responsible to administer the following tasks: construct social marketing and mass media campaigns, organize community action, conduct research for scholarly articles, and assess, develop and implement health education programs. Workers may also be responsible for writing grants and ad...

Do Patient CoPayments Produce Better Health Outcomes?

Do Patient CoPayments Produce Better Health Outcomes? Rising healthcare expenses in developed nations have made it difficult for many people to seek the medical care they need. From 2011 to 2012, healthcare costs in the United States increased 3.7 percent, costing consumers $2.8 trillion, or $8,915 each person. Some analysts estimated the latest figures to be closer to $3.8 trillion with government spending at a whopping 17.9% of GDP.Australians spent $132.4 billion on healthcare, while people in the UK spent £24.85 billion. Government expenditure in both these countries sit at between 9-10% of GDP, which may seem more manageable compared to the US, however healthcare leaders in both these countries are taking a firm view of preventing any escalation of these percentages. With the high costs of health care around the world, many stakeholders wonder if introducing or adjusting copayments will produce better health outcomes. The topic is being hotly debated in Australia, where co-payme...

Health and Sanitation Practices and Academic Performance of Grade VI Pupils

Health and Sanitation Practices and Academic Performance of Grade VI Pupils The provision of health sanitation is a key development intervention - without it, ill health dominates a life without dignity. Simply having access to sanitation increases health, well-being and economic productivity. Inadequate sanitation impacts individuals, households, communities and countries. Despite its importance, achieving real gains in sanitation coverage has been slow. Achieving the internationally agreed targets for sanitation and hygiene poses a significant challenge to the global community and can only be accomplished if action is taken now. Low-cost, appropriate technologies are available. Effective program management approaches have been developed. Political will and concerted actions by all stakeholders can improve the lives of millions of people in the immediate future.Nearly XMRsanitation. How A Complete Body Health Check Up Can Uncover Hidden Diseases

Dalai Lama: "Man surprised me most about humanity. Because he sacrifices his health in order to make money. Then he sacrifices money to recuperate his health... "You get your car tuned-up every year. Why wouldn't you get an annual medical check-up as well? An annual health check-up or periodic health check is useful as it can help to detect and identify diseases or the warning signs of an impending disease very early. This makes treatment a lot more effective, less expensive and less invasive. In addition to detecting such diseases before a patient turns seriously ill, such periodic check ups also give you a detailed update on various health parameters like cholesterol levels, blood sugar levels, blood pressure and body weight. This helps to gauge your overall health and it enables health care providers to assess health risks and advise you on lifestyle on dietary measures to counter such risks.Benefits of an annual health check upThere are several advantages of a re...

What's The Definition Of Physical Health and Does Good Health Naturally Mean All Natural Is Good?

Let's begin with a good health definition in general. The WHO health definition (World Health Organization), albeit from 1948: "Health is a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity". Assuming that's true, what's the definition of physical health and does good health naturally mean that "all natural" is good, especially as it applies to food? What's the definition of physical health? Is there one?Based on the WHO health definition as it applies to physical health, is it safe to say that simply because everything is working as it should in the absence of disease or infirmity (weakness or ailment), that we're not necessarily in good physical health? What do you think?I personally believe there is more to being healthy in the moment. On the other hand, I also believe that because we are only guaranteed the present, if you're healthy, don't take it for granted. Enjoy it whil...

County Health Department - A Great Resource for Physician Groups and Hospitals

As clinical providers seek ways to improve the health of their patients at the population level, one great resource that they should tap is their county health department. There are many resources and skills that health departments will share with physicians and other providers that will improve their ability to improve the health of their patients. In my work I have had numerous occasions to collaborate with the chief epidemiologist of the Kent County Health Department of Michigan-Mr. Brian Hartl. Through these contacts and through an introductory epidemiology course I have found that health departments are experts at providing population level health services. This is in contrast to most clinical providers who excel at working with their patients on a face-to-face level. Both staff of physician offices and staff of health departments are concerned with the health of individuals and groups of people.Clinicians most often work with individuals during face-to-face encounters. They t...

How Smoking Impacts Your Health Insurance Policy

It's a well-known fact that smoking causes an adverse effect on your health. You must have seen the warning message on all cigarette boxes - 'Smoking is injurious to health'. Smoking tobacco is a root cause of 30% of all cancer deaths and causes 16 times higher risk of heart attack. There are almost 120 million smokers in India. As per World Health Organization, India accommodates around 12% of the world's smoking population. The number of men smoking tobacco has increased from 78 million in year 1998 to 108 million in the year 2015. Tobacco consumption is accountable for the death of 6 million people each year. Direct tobacco consumption accounts for over 5 million deaths and 0.6 million deaths are due to exposure to second-hand smoke. Considering serious public health risks, the Government has banned smoking in public places from 2nd October, 2008.Not only your health, it also causes you to pay higher premiums for a health insurance policy, due to increased health...

Member Engagement: A "Must-Have" for Health Plans Today

As Health Reform continues to unfold, the pace of change is picking up speed, as new models of reimbursement, care delivery and access are taking shape. These shifts on the provider side should represent good news for millions of Americans that need better support from the healthcare system, especially since many of those with chronic disease aren't currently getting recommended care. Coupled with the fact that most patients do not adhere to their medication and treatment regimens or recommended lifestyle and health behavior changes, and it's easy to spot some of the challenges ahead. Here's where the payer side, particularly health plans, can really help.Health plans have ready access to claims data and other relevant clinical information plus a direct line to their members for targeted messaging and clinical interventions. While not a traditional strategic imperative, health plans do have a significant opportunity to help drive behavior change, reduce risk, and produce...

Workplace Mental Health - A Series - Program Integration (Start Today!)

Good mental health is fundamental to maintaining good physical health. And you want your employees to experience total worker health, correct? The fact that the mind and the body cannot be separated results in an inseparable relationship between physical and mental health. Despite the fact that the connections are striking, integration of the two fields in worksite wellness programming still has not occurred in any meaningful way. Worksite wellness practitioners need to better understand the connections between physical and mental health so they can intervene more effectively with employees to improve the outcomes in both areas. It is important to address the integration of physical and mental health for the following reasons:• The individual employee's mental health status or the presence of a mental illness such as depression or anxiety can affect an individual's ability to undertake health promoting behaviors that address their physical health status. It is therefore crit...

What Is The Focus of Worksite Wellness Today? - A Series - What Is Health? (Does It Matter?)

The field and practice of worksite wellness today basically revolves around three terms - health, wellness and wellbeing. Other terms also seen used include: thriving, flourishing, health promotion, optimal living and quality of life. But the big three are health, wellness and wellbeing.Since these terms are used interchangeably or as synonyms, I have wondered just how different or the same these terms are? When I framed out this question in my mind, I thought it would be simple enough to just look-up their definitions and I would have my answer. But, boy was I wrong. Definitions only got me so far and not very far at that. It appears that a clearer picture requires understanding the term's concept and context, as well as its definition. What Is Health?Probably, the most commonly cited definition of health is the 1948 definition by the World Health Organization (WHO). "Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease...

What Is Worksite Wellness All About? - A Series - What Is Health Status? (Consider This!)

The field and practice of worksite wellness today basically revolves around three terms - health, wellness and wellbeing. Other terms also seen used include: thriving, flourishing, health promotion, optimal living and quality of life. But the big three are health, wellness and wellbeing.Since these terms are used interchangeably or as synonyms, I have wondered just how different or the same are these terms? When I framed out this question in my mind, I thought it would be simple enough to just look-up their definitions and I would have my answer. But, boy was I wrong. Definitions only got me so far and not very far at that. As I was reviewing definitions, it occurred to me that worksite wellness programs today are not even necessarily about health, but more about employee health status. These two terms differ. So how do they differ? Based on the definitions and reading I have done health status is a state at a fixed point in time, as opposed to the more global, encompassing concept...

What Is The Focus of Worksite Wellness Today? - A Series - Health As A Concept (Think About This!)

Health is certainly the focus of worksite wellness programs today. And you do want your program to have clarity of focus, right?A look at the definitions of health doesn't really help us to establish what health really is. Beyond the definitions, there are two ways to view health:• The reductionist/mechanistic view• The health creation or production viewThe difference in these views can be seen in both the different definitions of health and how health as a concept is implemented or executed. These two different views see health as being either a personal choice, or as a social responsibility.Health, when viewed through the reductionist/mechanistic lens, is considered to be either personal or individually determined. This view is about a link between health and the body. The reductionist/mechanistic view is a medical view of health. Health is seen as being a medical problem with medical solutions delivered by medical care.In this view, health is medicalized. Medicalization is ...

What Is Worksite Wellness All About? - A Series - The Health Status Concept (Today's Approach)

The various definitions of health status indicate that it can be determined on the basis of both objective and subjective measures. Typically, in the workplace, it is determined on the basis of clinical biometric measures such as BMI (body mass index), blood pressure, weight, cholesterol levels and blood sugar level. These objective measures are derived through a process commonly known as biometric screening.Since health status can involve both objective and subjective data, knowing these different data points is important.Subjective Data Sources• Biographical information• Physical symptoms• Past health history• Family history• Health beliefs and values• LifestyleObjective Data Sources• Physical characteristics• Appearance• Health, lifestyle and other behaviors• Body systems functioning• Measurements and screening results• Results from lab testingSince there is no standard for health status, it can be based on either objective or subjective data. Generally though, current approach...

Significance of Public Health for the Health Sector of Pakistan

Pakistan, as we all know is a developing country and we are currently going through lots of challenges and issues. These issues vary from terrorism, energy crisis and poverty to poorly developed education and health systems.Health, which is the basic human right, has unfortunately not been our priority. This statement is supported by the fact that according to the World Health Organization 2013 statistics, the health system of our country is currently ranked as 122 out of 190 countries. This is a very alarming figure especially considering the fact that one of our neighboring countries Iran is ranked as 93 in the same list. This particular figure definitely draws our attention towards issues in the health sector which we are currently facing.Firstly, we need to understand what is meant by health system. The health system does not only include hospitals and clinicians. It rather involves anything and everything which directly or indirectly affects the health of populations. The hea...

Government-Run Health Care Cannot Work!

Government-Run Healt It would be GREAT if our government could successfully manage American's Health Care needs. I would be all in if the government guaranteed good health for everyone, and they were even remotely qualified to make such a guarantee. The truth is we all face different health issues at different ages. The recent health issues I faced were handled by doctors, hospitals, and nurses. I had made poor food and exercise choices and suffered a stroke because of those poor choices. Health professionals guided my recovery and no person from the government or from the health insurance company ever visited me while I was hospitalized or in recovery. The task of defining what a health care system looks should be determined by you and your doctor, not the health insurance companies, government, and lawyers that are currently the face of our health system. The government, i.e. politicians, claim we all need health insurance, but who will pay for the premiums, co-pays, and not-c...

Wellness Coordinators: Approach Employee Health Holistically (You Can't Afford Not To!)

There are multiple determinants to health. And you do want to address as many as you can through your work site wellness program, correct?Essentially, in the workplace setting, employee health is determined as a function of individual practices, organizational practices and the greater community in which the organization resides. In order to approach employee health holistically then, the workplace wellness program must address these three levels.Individual Health DeterminantsResearchers estimate that the individual determinants of health account for up to an estimated 40% of how healthy an individual is. At the individual level, biology, genetics, age and gender all impact individual health. Researchers estimate that these physiological determinants of health account for approximately 10% of how healthy an individual is.Researchers have also found that an individual's experiences in childhood impact how healthy they are in adulthood. Experiencing trauma in childhood adversely...

Community Needs Health Assessment

In 2012 the Internal Revenue Service mandated that all non-profit hospitals undertake a community health needs assessment (CHNA) that year and every three years thereafter. Further, these hospitals need to file a report every year thereafter detailing the progress that the community is making towards meeting the indicated needs. This type of assessment is a prime example of primary prevention strategy in population health management. Primary prevention strategies focus on preventing the occurrence of diseases or strengthen the resistance to diseases by focusing on environmental factors generally.I believe that it is very fortunate that non-profit hospitals are carrying out this activity in their communities. By assessing the needs of the community and by working with community groups to improve the health of the community great strides can be made in improving public health, a key determinant of one's overall health. As stated on the Institute for Healthcare Improvement's ...

The Impact Of Shift Work On Health

The health and motivation for shift work has been known to have its own peculiar demands. This has set it apart from jobs that have traditional hours of work. Shift work has its own health merits. The shift work has been created to aid workflow processes between employer, employee and tasks at hand. Over the years, it has been noticed that workers identified in shift work often receive better health plans, health products and remuneration and by this, give shift workers time to do other tasks or personal chores while being watchful of individual mental health. However, the scientific and medical communities report continually that shift workers concerned stand an increased risk of certain health disorders and mental health challenges that have severe negative impact on the general well-being of work shift staff which may not be achieved until the right health products are used. There is a concern for the 9 to 5ers, as one sees a case of the health of those who barely get by with the...
